Students have the opportunity to participate in community visits, where they can develop their understanding of the wider world and their place within it. This includes visits to local supermarkets, shops and cafes; community gardens; theatres; and visits to local sports facilities, including the gym and swimming baths. They also engage in opportunities to visit and meet with local community groups, such as visits to St. James’ Church, or to meet with their peers from other local schools and colleges.
During such visits, students learn how to use local amenities; develop life skills such as handling and using money; communication when ordering food or asking where products are within the supermarket; recognition of signs within shops and leisure facilities; e.g. male/female toilet; keeping safe in the community and developing independence skills.
