Communication Team

Makaton

Makaton is a language programme that uses signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used alongside speech in spoken word order.

With Makaton, children and adults can communicate straight away using the signs and symbols. Some will stop using the signs and symbols naturally as their speech, whilst some will continue to use both.

Makaton is used every day at Fairfield School. We have Makaton trained staff who are actively involved in delivering training to the students, parents and carers as well as the whole staff team, including the travel and transport staff.

Our aim is to raise the profile of Makaton throughout school. We have a “Makaton Sign of the Week” and this is showcased by the staff and also displayed around school.

Sign & Sing and Choir

We love our Makaton choir at as we love to sign and sing! This is open to the whole school and is an amazing, immersive experience; building confidence through music.

Students use Makaton signs and their voices to perform a variety of songs such as Proud Mary (Tina Turner), I’m on My Way (The Proclaimers), Set Fire To The Rain (Adele), Don’t Stop Believing (Journey), Shake it Off (Taylor Swift) and many, many more.

Our Makaton Choir consists of students from all of the pathways. We perform in a variety of events both in school and in our local community.
