We love our Makaton choir at Fairfield School as we love to sign and sing!
Our choir meets every Wednesday afternoon for a Sign and Sing session which is led by four Local Makaton Tutors and one Regional Makaton Tutor. There are a variety of ages of students from Early Years through to Post 16.
Makaton is used throughout school as it is designed to support spoken language- signs are used with speech, in spoken word order to help students to communicate. Using signs can help students who have no speech or whose speech is unclear.
Students use Makaton signs and their voices to perform a variety of songs such as Proud Mary (Tina Turner), I’m on my Way (The Proclaimers), Set Fire to the rain (Adele), Don’t Stop Believing (Journey), Shake it off (Taylor Swift) and many, many more.
The choir joins with other local schools in the Spenborough Trust and performs a Christmas Concert at Batley Town Hall every year – we love performing our songs and everyone joins in with signing and singing.
